What is Dry Ice & How is It Made?

Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide with a temperature of -109.3°F. It sublimates—turns directly from solid to gas—making it perfect for refrigeration and transport. It’s made by releasing liquid CO₂ into a pressurized chamber where it rapidly expands, forming solid “snow” that is then compressed into blocks, slabs, or pellets.

Use a cooler insulated with a towel or blanket to slow sublimation. Avoid storing it in your home freezer as the fans may speed up sublimation and damage the appliance.
In professional containers, expect about 6% sublimation per day. Regular coolers may see higher rates depending on temperature and usage.
No. Dry ice is extremely cold and can cause burns. Always handle with insulated gloves or appropriate tools.
