Industry Applications

FOOD

Food

The food industry uses dry ice for a variety of meat processing, shipping and other industry applications. One specific example is sausage makers who grind dry ice into the meat mixture during production to inhibit bacterial growth, preserve freshness, and maintain flavor. It’s also used during the shipping process. The dry ice keeps it frozen and by the time the product reaches its destination, the dry ice is sublimated back into a vapor leaving nothing behind.

Shipping

Anything you need to keep frozen during shipping, meat, food, other perishables, can be shipped with dry ice. Check with your provider to know the limits for how much dry ice you can ship, but it is usually around 5 to 10 pounds. Dry ice is a popular way to keep things frozen during shipping because it lasts well and there is no cleanup, once the dry ice sublimates, it’s gone.

Science and Research

The main use for dry ice in research facilities is to rapidly freeze samples and products for long term storage. Being able to quickly freeze samples is important for the reproducibility of experiments, it also doesn’t leave a watery mess, and keeps samples much colder than regular ice.

Craft Brew and Beverage Carbonation

In the craft brew and beverage industry, carbonation is a critical aspect of the production process. CO2 serves two main purposes. First, in craft brewing, CO2 is used to purge oxygen from the headspace in beer tanks, minimizing dissolved oxygen levels and preventing flavor compound oxidation. This results in better-tasting and longer-lasting beer. Secondly, carbonation is the process of dissolving CO2 gas in drinks, giving beer its foamy, fizzy texture. This carbonation process is also responsible for the bubbles in soda waters and soft drinks.

Greenhouse Yield Enhancement

CO2 plays a role in agriculture. When used in greenhouses, it contributes to increased crop yields. There are different strategies for disbursing CO2 in greenhouses, but each way can significantly shorten the growing period while enhancing the overall yield and quality of crops.

BLASTING

Dry Ice Blasting

Dry Ice blasting is similar to pressure washing. The main difference is there is much less cleanup since you don’t need to worry about water, just the dirt that you lift off whatever you are cleaning. It works by blasting small pellets at supersonic speeds, causing the ice to sublimate on impact. That lifts the dirt and impurities from the source. Dry ice blasting is non-abrasive, non-conductive, non-toxic, and non-flammable, making it a safe option for cleaning many different surfaces.
